A guide for homeowners & builders

Why hire an electrician-led smart home company?

Smart home systems sit on top of electrical work. Here is what it means to have one licensed team own both—and when it matters.

The short version

The keypad is the last step. The wiring is the first.

A Lutron keypad, a motorized shade, a Frame TV, or a Tesla charger only works as well as the circuit, box, and panel behind it. On most smart home projects, someone has to do the licensed electrical work and someone has to program the system. Sometimes that is two companies working well together; sometimes it is one.

River City Electric is a licensed electrical contractor—TN license #75272 and GA license #EN218035—that also installs and programs the systems. Here is what that changes.

  • 01

    The panel & load calcs

We check capacity before adding chargers, generators, or equipment, and upgrade the panel when needed.

  • 02

    Wiring & permits

New circuits, neutrals and box depth at keypads, shade power, and transfer equipment—with permits where required.

  • 03

    Keypads & programming

Lutron Caséta, RadioRA 3, and Lutron shades installed and programmed in-house.

Fewer handoffs

What one team changes on a real project.

  1. 01

    One plan

Power, control locations, and equipment are planned together, so nothing gets designed around a missing circuit.

  2. 02

    One schedule

Rough-in, trim, and programming happen on one timeline—useful for builders coordinating trades.

  3. 03

    One answer

If a scene, a shade, or a breaker misbehaves, there is no question about whose side it is on.

  4. 04

    Service after the sale

The team that wired and programmed the house takes the call later, Mon–Fri, 8 AM–4 PM.

To be fair

When a dedicated AV company is a great fit.

Plenty of excellent AV and home-theater companies do outstanding work, often alongside an electrician. If your project centers on a dedicated theater or a complex video system, a specialist may be the right lead. Ask any company you consider the same questions below.

  • Who does the licensed electrical work?

Panel changes, new circuits, and transfer equipment need a licensed contractor.

  • Who programs the system?

Find out whether programming is in-house or subcontracted.

  • Who do we call in a year?

Ask how service after the sale works, and during what hours.

Questions

Electrician-led smart home, in plain English.

Is an AV integrator or an electrician better for a smart home?

It depends on the project. Many good AV companies partner with an electrician for the panel and line-voltage work. What matters is that someone owns the whole job. With River City Electric, the licensed electrical work and the system programming are done by the same team.

Does smart lighting need a licensed electrician?

Replacing switches with line-voltage dimmers and keypads is electrical work, and new circuits, panel changes, and generator transfer equipment generally require a licensed contractor and, where required, a permit.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, where the work requires one. We handle permits and inspections as part of the electrical scope.
